Transformer Explosion

Scenario
A large power transformer in a transmission substation exploded only few months after installation and commissioning. The explosion was felt miles away and led to extensive damage to the substation in addition to a wide-spread power outage.
Challenge
LWG was retained on behalf of the manufacturer of the transformer to participate in the investigation of the incident. The investigation went on for several months and was performed in different locations including Germany where components of the power grid were manufactured.
The transformer and many of its subassemblies were dismantled and examined in an attempt to determine the exact cause of the incident.
Outcome
Following detailed and extensive research and engineering analysis of the findings, LWG was able to render an expert opinion regarding the exact cause of the loss. The manufacturer was able to incorporate some of the findings in their design of the transformer for specific applications to prevent the occurrence of the incident.
